Caregiver Stress

April 29, 2024

Let’s talk about stress. Specifically, let’s talk about the stress associated with being a caregiver. Being a caregiver can be an extraordinarily rewarding experience and something to be proud of. Learning things like compassion, empathy and resourcefulness are wonderful outcomes of being a caregiver. Did you know 1 in 4 Canadians are providing care for a loved one (statistics Canada, 2018) and did you also know that the unpaid work done by caregivers equates to 97 billion dollars of economic value every year? Thats a big deal.

So what is it about being a caregiving that leads to so much stress? It can be the obvious things like the amount of time spent caring for someone, or the financial burden this can create. Many people have to hold down full time jobs in addition to caring for a loved one. If you’re suffering from caregiver stress, you might notice your own health declining. Not getting enough sleep and not attending to your own health appointments. You might also notice that your interpersonal relationships are suffering. It’s hard to give your time and attention to others when you’re acting as a full time caregiver to someone else.

Caregivers are a vital piece of the healthcare puzzle so its important that they are supported in this noble endeavour. In addition to finding time for yourself; things like yoga, journalling, time outside, I’ve compiled a list of resources you can access. This is not a comprehensive list, rather a starting point. Know that help exists, and you can and should reach out if you’re feeling overwhelmed.
